Meet Our Coaches!

Alex Chtanine, a native of Riga, Latvia, began lifting and competing in Weightlifting in the old Soviet system. He set several Latvian Junior records and was a member of the USSR Junior National Team in 1975. In 1979 in a pre Moscow Olympics competition Alex won a Bronze Medal (David Rigert won Gold) totaling 367.5 in the 100 kilo class. Alex lifted 'professionally' for 8 years, serving in the Soviet Army for two of those years and was awarded the Master of Soviet Sports designation in 1980. He also is certified as a Club Coach by USAW Weightlifting. Alex immigrated to the United States in 1993 and now works as a foreman for a metals importer in Pittsburgh.


Rege Becker, is the founder of the Pittsburgh Barbell Club and has been involved in strength sports for over 30 years. He is certified as a Senior Coach by USA Weightlifting and serves as President of the Allegheny Mountain Association Local Weightlifting Committee. Rege is the Corporate Security and Compliance Officer for PPG Industries in the Corporate Law Department.




Al Vogt is a thirty year practitioner of the 'iron sports' and has competed in both Powerlifting and Weightlifting. In addition to assisting as a coach at MASC Al oversees the weightlifting program at Champions Gym in Baldwin Pa. He is a certified USAW Club Coach and is active in the leadership of the Allegheny Mountain Association Local Weightlifting Committee. Al is a certified public accountant and serves as forensic investigator for the FBI.
